I think I am qualified to answer this question. I visited MIT just a week back for my graduate studies and I also did my undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras.MIT had hosted an Open House for their newly admitted students as they do every year. They conducted lab tours for us and I also interacted with a number of grad students and professors. The following answer is based on my limited experience at MIT and the 4 years I spent at IIT Madras.1.The peer group :- Well, the peer group at IIT is also great, but at MIT, it is at a whole new level altogether. Among the people that I interacted with at the Open House was a guy who had worked at SpaceX , a guy who had worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at NASA, a German girl who had spearheaded a social enterprise in India in which they repaired leaking roofs to provide better housing facilities in rural areas, another adventurer who had taken an year off just to travel Spain, a battery expert, a solar and thermal energy expert and even a business consultant! I am a mechanical engineer and interacting with all these people was just paradise! These people are what make MIT great and definitely better than the IITs.2. A common love :- If there is one thing that I saw at MIT was their extreme love and passion for research! MIT actually serves the purpose for which it was established :- To make advances in fundamental research and do pioneering work to help make the world a better place. Everyone at MIT is in love with their research so much that it makes them want to stay at MIT for 30+ years! One professor exclaimed that :- Its a beautiful place which makes you want to stay. There are many of us who came to MIT as students and never left !IITs were established to create leaders who would help accelerate the technological advancement of India. Well, that objective is far from being realized. There is a small percentage of incoming students who are interested in technology in the first place. An even smaller percentage are actually interested in research or a career path aimed at boosting India’s technological development. IIT is not a place where people want to stay for the rest of their lives, its just a means of helping them get to a better place in their life. There is no single element which binds the institute together. This makes people leave immediately after the Bachelors degree and do something which they love!To conclude this point, MIT has a core belief and all incoming students more or less share that belief. MIT is thus an end in itself.IITs on the other hand do not have any unifying belief as such. IIT maybe called as a means to achieving an end which is different for different individuals.3. The infrastructure :- At MIT, research equipment and infrastructure is indeed state of the art! MIT recieves huge amount of funding from various organizations. These guys do cutting edge research( I saw the Cheetah Robot, freely flowing ketchup in ketchup bottles, Nano water purification, high efficiency solar panels, Mice Brain Optics! etc)in whichever field you can imagine! At IIT, research infrastructure is great and they also do amazing research, but not at par with MIT!4. The hierarchical system : At MIT, students and professors are in the same boat:- trying to solve a research problem. You can talk to a Professor about anything and everything! He is really like a friend. This makes it really easy for a graduate student to communicate, take advice and counter professors. At IIT, there is a clear hierarchy. Professors are referred to as Sir in mails and we can't talk about anything and everything with them!5. Undergraduate and graduate student interaction:- At MIT, this interaction is much more and hence there is harmony between these two groups !At IITs on the other hand, there is a great imbalance and disconnect between the undergraduate and the graduate community.P.S:- See this notice board at MIT!The diversity of activities conveyed through this is really amazing! Thanks for reading! Please do comment if you want to discuss anything!Edit1:- Thanks Abhishek and Swarup for correcting me in the undergraduate and graduate student ratio at IIT Madras. However, I maintain my point about the imbalance in these two communities!
