指针式和数字式石英手表的共同特点是：能源都是采用电池，常用氧化银电池或汞电池；时间基准都是采用石英振荡器，频率一般为 32768Hz。为了从这个频率获得时间的基本单位──秒、分和小时，采用中大规模互补型金属氧化物半导体集成电路，即CMOS集成电路。

这两种手表的最大差异在于：指针式石英手表中，为了把电信号转变为指针的转动来指示时间，采用了作为换能器的微型步进电机以及齿轮传动系统；数字式石英手表中则采用数字液晶显示器件，并在电路中设有相应的控制电路和升压电路等。

1、石英表的走时秒针是一格一跳，走时十分准确，一般要求月差在15秒以内，有三针和两针两种。

2、机芯中采用集成电路，结构较机械表机芯简单许多，装配非常简便。

3、使用方便，佩戴无需上发条，一块电池一般可用2-3年。但有些石英表用锂电池，使用寿命可达7-8年左右。

4、石英表价格相对比机械表便宜(同品牌同款式)，但有些高档品牌石英表价格昂贵是因为品牌好，外观材料好(18K金或钻石或贵金属)，设计出色。

机械表

1、机械表走时与石英表不同，机械表秒针是连续不间断地走。

2、因机械表机芯复杂，走时误差较大(视各品牌而定)一般允许范围+-45秒。天文台机芯误差较小，一天的误差在-4/+6秒以内正常。机械表走时误差不能累计，手表过一段时间需调试。

3、工艺精细，使用方便，上足发条可走36小时以上。

4、机芯使用年限长久,豪华机械表具备收藏的价值。

5、外观要比石英表厚重一些(视各品牌而定)，有一些品牌的手动机械表也很薄。
