虽然这项技术被称作防盗技术，但是实际上这项技术并不能阻止窃贼**你的笔记本，它仅能保证笔记本丢失后数据的安全性。根据资料显示，如果笔记本被盗，该技术可以锁定笔记本的系统和硬盘，以保证数据不会外泄。

因笔记本失窃而导致的数据丢失问题是一个长期存在的问题，并逐步受到关注。2006年12月，波音公司报告其失窃的笔记本中包括382000个前任或在任雇员的个人信息、社会安全号码、家庭住址等信息。目前此项防盗技术即是为IT经理人设计的保护数据方式。

除了Intel，其他几家公司也在致力研发笔记本防盗技术，例如联想、McAfee、富士通西门子和Phoenix技术公司。
