影片背景是在维多利亚时期的英国,身处上流社会的少女Lucy和她的表姐Charlotte一起来到意大利的佛罗伦萨度假。当她们打开旅馆房间的窗户,却发觉无法一览佛罗伦萨的优美风景时,失望之情溢于言表。英国人Emerson也是和儿子George一起来佛罗伦萨旅游的,当他在餐桌上得知两位女士的烦恼之后,热心的欲将他们能看见风景的房间调换给她们时,却被Charlotte矜持的拒绝了。后在牧师Beebe的帮助下还是和Emerson调换了房间。这间看的见风景的房间却成了George和Lucy的缘分之地。
俊朗帅气的George在餐桌上对美丽且有典雅气质的Lucy一见钟情,特意用菜在盘子上摆了个问号向Lucy示意,而矜持的Lucy故做未见。当George与Lucy在广场偶遇时,Lucy刻意回避George,却因在广场见到两人斗殴时其中一人血流满面而晕倒在地。George自然不会放过这个英雄救美的机会,清醒后的Lucy对George产生了好感。
后来众人结伴同行前往佛罗伦萨的郊外欣赏美丽的意大利田园风光。Lucy欲独自寻找牧师Beebe,却遇到了在草丛中欣赏风景的George。George见到Lucy后情不自禁地走到她身边并突然的吻了毫无心理准备的Lucy。在如诗如画的田园风光中,一曲令人心旷神怡的咏叹调“朵蕾塔之梦”却是恰到好处的衬托出了Lucy领悟爱情的美妙之处,此时画面与音乐结合得极富诗意而显得唯美。
Charlotte认为George与Lucy身份不符,为免George继续纠缠Lucy而与她提前回到了伦敦。Lucy的母亲为Lucy安排了一位贵族绅士Cevil作为她的未婚夫,Lucy也对这位极具绅士风度的Cevil很满意。可这位Cevil却似乎太绅士了,举手投足无不注意自己的绅士风度,而他欣赏的也只是Lucy的美貌和她的琴艺。
George与父亲Emerson借故找到Cevil,并租了Cevil一间靠近Lucy家附近的小别墅居住。牧师Beebe带着Lucy的弟弟Freddy拜访他们。George带两人来到森林里的一处水塘戏水玩耍,玩疯了的三人童心大发在水塘边追打嬉戏。恰巧Lucy和母亲及Cevil在林中散步路过,惊见三人赤身裸体嬉戏。只见Cevil忙着引导两位女士远离三人,而三人手忙脚乱的四处躲藏的搞笑场景。此情此景,让人不由捧腹大笑。英国影片也是毫无忌讳,尺度大胆,和法国片有得一拼。
George受邀来Lucy家打网球,Cevil却故作绅士状的在一旁诵读女作家Eleanor的小说。Lucy发觉自己在佛罗伦萨的郊外被George亲吻的秘密竟被写到了小说里面,Lucy明白是Charlotte的多嘴惹的祸,慌乱之下借故要去喝茶。George在小道上追上Lucy并再度亲吻了她。
Lucy在George热情狂放的爱情面前显得犹豫不决。为了完成她与Cevil的婚姻,Lucy狠心赶走了失望的George。但做作虚伪的Cevil越来越让Lucy无法忍受,她不愿变为Cevil用来炫耀和摆设的一个音乐盒,毅然和Cevil解除了婚约。
Lucy决定去希腊旅游来忘记这一切,当她前往火车站路过George住的地方时,见到工人搬动家具准备搬走的场景。Lucy思绪万千忍不住回去找George,却见到了George的父亲Emerson。Emerson之前已在Charlotte的帮助下得知了事情的真相,便直截了当的告诉Lucy,George一直深爱着她,而Lucy也爱George却一直隐瞒自己的情感。在Emerson诚挚的劝说中,Lucy终于挣脱了自己内心的束缚而去追寻自己的爱情。
本片改编自英国著名作家EM Forster的同名小说。影片非常忠实于原著,情节对白基本未改。影片还采用了类似歌剧的形式,全片共分15个章节,基本也是按照小说的章节定义的。本片带有浓浓的英国文学气息和英国式的幽默。导演Merchant Ivory曾先后改编过EM Forster的三部作品《看得见风景的房间》、《莫利斯》和《霍华德庄园》,而这部《看得见风景的房间》是其中最受欢迎、评价也最高的,并获得了87年奥斯卡最佳美术指导、最佳服装设计、最佳改编剧本三项大奖。
Daniel Day Lewis因本片而一举成名,他极好的演活了虚伪做作的绅士Cevil,看着Daniel Day Lewis略显夸张偏又一幅很有教养的造型,着实为影片增添了不少亮点。当Cevil因从未吻过Lucy而请求与她亲吻时,竟然笨拙紧张的忘了取下夹在鼻上的镜片就去亲吻Lucy的情景,让人觉得既滑稽又好笑。很难把Daniel Day Lewis在本片中的形象和他以后饰演的狂野奔放的摩根战士和自强不息的残疾人形象联系在一起,看来Daniel Day Lewis的演技的确一流。
