1936年8月，根据毛泽东的指示，红一方面军政治部成立编辑委员会，将一部分长征回忆录编成《二万五千里》（也称《长征记》）一书。

编者根据长征中的各种命令、日记和报纸，制作了《红军第一军团长征中经过的地点及里程一览表》（这也是目前所能查到唯一记载中央红军长征中经过的地点和里程的详表）。该表详细地列出了红1军团直属队在长征371天中行军的每一天所经过的主要地点及里程。

根据该表，红1军团直属队在长征中共走了18095里。依据该表中所列红1军团直属队长征经过的地点，后来测绘部门在比例尺1：10万的地形图上用仪器进行测量。

并按照当地地形，在平面计算结果基础上乘以坡度系数，得出实际里程为9249.5公里，即18499里，比里程表上的18095里还略远一些。以误差在正负2％计，两者的距离基本上是吻合的。

这就证实，当时里程表上的数字是准确可靠的。18095里只是红1军团直属队单纯行军的里程。作战部队的行军路线更加复杂，加上侦察、筹粮、作战、做群众工作等，所走路程比机关更多。所以，根据有关资料进一步分析计算，红一方面军长征中走得最远的部队，所走距离确有二万五千里。
